A bit OT, sorry but it is an emergency

My Pegasos has broken (see http://www.avelino.it/public/peg.html) and I don't know how I can get it repaired.

I tried to contact http://knabe.bwelf.de/service.php via email 8 days ago but no answer until now.

can you give me a tip on how to proceed?

Hi Paolo, Axel is probably asleep tonight and he may never have received your email. So, as not to disturb him on Sunday morning, why not send us the board on Monday? :)

Yes, it was the heatsink to cause the accident but nothing to do with a deficiency of cooling the CPU!
The problem was caused solely by the failure of the fastening system !!....
that's the problem with the G4 cpu card, cooling system must be checked on regular basis (i do this once a month).

hope your peg can get fixed by bplan's magic hands.

Naaa.. It's not the fan that dies. My CPU-card
died and my fan was still working perfectly..

But bPlan fixed it up and two weeks later I
had it back.

Note; warranty service ended for Pegasos a while ago. Free repairs are not available anymore. In this case, it would probably not apply anyway since the cooling solution was replaced.

All Pegasos users I know they have replaced the original heatsink on its own initiative.
None of us did it for lunacy or simple fun; indeed, that beautiful nuisance!!
You know: the original CPU fan about a year after purchase (less in my case) has
begun to show problems of noise and vibration and in a short time rotation would be
completely blocked with possible consequent damage to the CPU!!
This has happened to all users AFAIK, so we were FORCED to do so!
Why not then contact the official support for a replacement of the heatsink with a
genuine spare part?
I think to avoid having to repeat every year the same annoying operation (disassemble
the Pegasos to send the card) knowing that after a few months with the original heatsink
the noise and vibration would be returned (...)
Or maybe I am wrong and the original heatsink was already improved by the manufacturer
or there was an official guideline in this regard to solve the problem permanently?
What a paradox: to provide a remedy to a lack of design and support be found guilty of
tampering ....
Given the small size (no space for ball bearings...) ALL the small cooling fans of
standard quality available on the market are at risk in the short term (not just the
original fan of the Pegasos in particular!)
This is the reason that has led users, and I among them, to opt for a passive heatsink
and was not a choice of convenience or even underestimated: we would like to find
an effective and definitive solution to keep the Pegasos's CPU cooler as need and
nothing more since the original choice of the manufacturer does not warrant this!
The heatsink Zelman ZM-NB47J that I have mounted 3 years ago was a choice that I do
not regret, despite a broken point of attachment of this has seriously damaged my
Pegasos 20 days ago (somewhat unpredictable event, I believe)....
What I have did of so wrong?

Well, I am just saying, if you replace the heatsink with something else and that heatsink is not up to spec for drawing away the heat from the G4, this is what happens, usually.

I don't think we ever really tested the G4 with that Zalman. And like you said contacting bplan for a new heatsink/fan spare part would have been wiser.

Repairs can probably be done, but bplan will charge for it (as for even a repair where no modifications were done).

an update that closes this thread:
Axel Knabe told me that he had repaired the CPU card of my Pegasos2!

it was sufficient to replace the small MOSFET chip cooked.
G4 remained unharmed!

will be higher shipping costs than the price of repair!

about the cooler:
Axel for his personal Pegasos2 has adopted the same Zalman heatsink that I have mounted in my!

once repair was completed, he remounted on my CPU card the same heatsink that I had before and which had fallen.

the only difference is that he has replaced the original two plastic clip with two metal screws blocked by metal bolts to secure it.

Thank you all for your attention and support about my little drama that had a happy ending now :D

do you use only the zalman heatsink ? how hot goes the G4 with it ?

Grr..

My Pegs having real troubles, sometimes it doesn't power on, some times it does, then it crashes in either MorphOS 2.2/Amiga OS4.1 or Linux, then won't power on.

And sometimes it works perfectly all night then won't boot in the morning, grr...

Sometimes I get weird errors, on all OS, I've changed the Ram, the PSU, the Hard drive, removed everything put it back, and still the same, it's the intermittantness of its that the problem. Doin' me head in!

So it's probably the CPU module?

Anyone fix them? or got a cheap G3 module I could buy/borrow?
