Few questions. I got my hands on a Mac G4 450mhz, 512mb ram, Dvd-rom, Empty AGP slot, and what looks like 3 pci slots, a little longer then the ones i see in a PC. One of them has an ATI 3d Rage Pro agp 2x. Im looking to run Fedora 6. Can this handle it? And also, will it boot the Fedora 6 DVD image, and boot native without macosX? Thanks |

Your computer should work with Fedora Core 6. In the release notes for FC6, the minimum requirements for PPC graphic install is Quote: Recommended for graphical: 400 MHz G3 or better, 256MiB RAM.
as for booting from dvd/cd, try it and see if it works. The release notes say the first cd is bootable. If the dvd doesnot boot then burn a boot cd from /images/boot.iso on the dvd. nels |

I burned the Boot CD Image, and it worked. So then put in the dvd, and type "linux" and it says its loaded elfkernal, and it shows a bunch of text, and then it looks like the video scrambles, and there is just a scrambled image on the screen. Even whe i try booting with "linux text" i just get a scrambled image. Any ideas? This is a: Power Mac G4 AGP Power Mac 3,1 Power PC G4 (2.6) 450mhz 1mb L2 512 100mhz FSB ram Those are the system specs. It has an ATI Rage 3d Pro card. |

Hi! I have neither fedora nor a rage, but maybe appending video=rage:800x600-16 after linux helps... (?) |

i tried that but nothing worked i would type linux video=rage:800x600-16 linux video=rage:800x600 linux video=rage:1280x1024-16 linux video=rage:1280x1024 does the same thing it gets a far as loading ramdisk, then it switches to a screen with more text, and then immediately goes scrambled. The scrambling never looked like it changed resolutions though. It stayed the same size blocks. Also, im using a standard 15pin DSUB from my pc, and an adapter to have it work on the G4. It works just fine with macosx |

when using the boot cd wait until the installer requests the install dvd nels ps I have a powermac g4 400mhz with a ati rage video card, a dvd drive and an viewsonic a70 monitor. i burned the boot cd, booted with the 'c' key pressed. it booted up and asked for the install source, picked local cdrom, the dvd drive opened and i exchanged the boot cd for the install dvd. the gui installer loaded and all looks fine |

I tried what you said, but it did the same thing. Right when it gets done loading the ramdisk it switches to the linux console, and within less then a second, it scrambles. Just to make sure it wasnt the DVD, i downloaded the 6cd version as well, and booted cd1, and it did the same exact thing. Should i try and older version of FC? maybe FC 5? |

this sounds like your monitor can't handle the video out. on my setup the first screen after boot is at 48.7khz by 50.1hz according to my a70 monitor. if your monitor is old like before 1992 this is the problem or it may be the adapter your using. there are 5 screen prompts before the GUI. 1. language default english, press return 2. keyboard default US, press return 3. install source default cdrom press return the cd/dvd rom should open, exchange cds 4 cd exchange press return cd light will blink 5 check cd press righ arrow then return the GUI should show (the default freq is 37.7khz 60.1hz) nels |
