This kind of thing is exactly what you get when you upgrade distributions, unfortunately.
Can you try a clean Dapper install on another disk or partition, and see if that operates any better (it should, we shipped Dapper on every ODW for the past 6 months).
This will tell you exactly what is wrong; if it is your hardware, Dapper won't work. If it is the upgrade process, at least you will have a working system.
However in the end I would recommend you update to Edgy. Dapper may be long-term-support but that basically means they will only be pushing major security updates from hereon in. You would be better off with Edgy and the update process from Edgy to Edgy+1 should be a lot better, as they have really improved the process.
