Hello !

I would like to install enlightenment e17 on my Pegasos.

I've tried many tutorials without any success.
In fact, I'm afraid I've just f***ed up my distrib :-(

Here are the tutos I've tried :

Of course, none of these are working on my Pegasos II.

The packages of enlightment do not seem to be found (but the name is recognized in the database).

Well... Is that possible that no-one can help ?

Enlightment e17 seems to be a really nice window manager.

I'd really enjoy trying Enlightenment e17 (R17) or even e16 on PowerPC (Pegasos PPC) instead of Gnome or KDE.

Maybe someone succeded installing it (or it's previous version) on another distrib like Linux Suse or Linux YDL ?

I think that I'm going to compile it (but I must wait as I don't have my Pegasos for a couple of days...)

I've found a few tutorials :

Hi, geoffrey!

I began work on "enlightenmedia" some weeks ago.
It will be an enlightenment-D17 livecd for the pegasos with as many multimedia-applications as possible. It needs its time to be finished, but if you fail to
compile enlightenmedia on your own, I can make a tgz for you
(not all parts compiled- esmart has a compile error somewhere, so all
e-files depending on esmart are not included...)

Thank you for your offer.

I will contact you if it fails.

I'm also interested by making a small tutorial for the Pegasos book to explain how to install AROS with your liveCD (but it's a bit unstable right now).
So I'd need your email ;-)

hi Frostwork !

nice to know about your next livecd project, sounds very interesting.
Just a simple question, i tried your previous live-cds and almost everytime i got the same issue (and i'm not the only one) that is to say frequency issues with LCD screens. Would it be possible to tune your xorg.conf with lower monitor specs so it can be usable for every kind of screen ? (for example not going above 60Hz as vertical frequency).

Hello, I've just reinstalled a clean Ubuntu 5.10 (Debian based) on a Pegasos II PPC.

From here I now try to compile e17.
Unfortunatly, module "eet" does not want to compile. Says something like "undefined reference to `memcpy@@GLIBC_2.0'".
So I've tried to "apt-get install libglib2.0-dev" but it still does not work :(
Any idea ?

Note : there seems to be the same error with 'ecore' and 'embryo' modules :-(

Note 3 : I also tried to look for that error on Google... But found nothing very interesting (apparently).

I've encountered the same error when I tried to compile firefox.
So it's probably a general problem in ppc,

Thanks to "Frostwork" advice, I've changed gcc-4.0 to gcc-3.3.
There seems to be problems with old sources with new gcc (at least on ppc).

Now "eet" modules seems to compile (did not try the others)...

Here is what I did to fix the problem :

1) Remove gcc-4.0 :
apt-get remove gcc-4.0
(It will also remove g++, g++-4.0, gcc, gcc-4.0, libstdc++-6-4.0-dev)

2) Install gcc-3.3
apt-get install libstdc++5-3.3-dev
(It will also installs cpp-3.3, g++-3.3, gcc-3.3, libstdc++5)

Then do a few links by yourself :
cd /usr/bin
ln -s cpp-3.3 cpp
ln -s g++-3.3 g++
ln -s gcc-3.3 gcc

cd /usr/lib
ln -s /usr/bin/cpp-3.3 cpp

And then that should be working...

Great ! All the base EFC modules are now compiling + a few apps.

I've just launched e17 for the first time this morning !

Now, I'm trying to compile a few extra apps, but right now I'm only able to launch e17 through "startx" (with .xinitrc file) after having killed my gnome X session.

So right now, I can't make "engage" as default xsession... I guess that something of Ubuntu must be launched before...

Is there a way to configure the session menu of Ubuntu to add a new entry with enlightenment ? I have not found how right now !

So I'm going to try to install KDE as I found a way to configure the launched window manager from it on the web...

But if someone had a better idea...

It's now working, I can switch from Gnome, KDE or e17 !

A tutorial is now available in the Pegasos book and on http://wikipeg.free.fr.

The english version is not yet available but if you don't read french and want to try anyway, then try to use google translation on this :

I'm going to try to release all the packages as standard Debian packages so everyone should be able to install it without compiling it.

Just recognized that the snapshots on
http://enlightenment.freedesktop.org/
got updated.
Maybe we can get these to compile
(especially esmart, as the old 004-version didn't want to...)

I've succeded in making a few deb packages tonight.
I've succeded too by adding those to a sources.list file with a server tree structure. I will try this on a website later.

So I should be able to make a clean powerpc distro of e17.
"pegubuntu".

More news later...
right now evas does not compile (pb with compiler again...)
A weird message like "your C compiler can not compile"...

And I'm very tired... so maybe tomorrow...
