Post subject:  No network after upgrading from Breezy to Dapper
I've installed Breezy on my Peg2, without any problems, it worked very well. I removed the mkvmlinuz package (as it's buggy in Breezy) and installed the mkvmlinuz from the debian repository. Mkvmlinuz now worked perfectly, automatically making the vmlinuz image after every kernel update and automatically making the "vmlinuz" link pointing to the latest kernel version. I set up the boot in openfirmware with this link, so my breezy was booting always with the latest available kernel. Fine.

One day I decided to upgrade to Dapper. Let's see what happens. The update was successful, Ubuntu booted with the new kernel. There were some modules which caused malfuncion during the boot (like the pcmcia), so I had to press ctrl+c to countinue the boot process. After removing these modules my dapper seemed to work perfectly for the first sight.

Then I wanted to use the network, and here comes my problem. The network is not working. If I type ifconfig both the via-rhine(eth0) and the gigabit(eth1) ethernet interface are there. I have dhcp setup for eth0 and my router should arrange the dhcp for eth0. But it's simply not working. Typing dhclient eth0 also has no effect, no dhcp-offer arrives. I even cannot access my router's admin interface.
I tried to setup the eth0 with static ip settings, also no effect.
Also tried to remove and readd the via-rhine driver, nothing changed..

Has anybody seen something like this? Is it a known issue or just some setup problem with my system?

Any help would be appreciated.

This kind of thing is exactly what you get when you upgrade distributions, unfortunately.

Can you try a clean Dapper install on another disk or partition, and see if that operates any better (it should, we shipped Dapper on every ODW for the past 6 months).

This will tell you exactly what is wrong; if it is your hardware, Dapper won't work. If it is the upgrade process, at least you will have a working system.

However in the end I would recommend you update to Edgy. Dapper may be long-term-support but that basically means they will only be pushing major security updates from hereon in. You would be better off with Edgy and the update process from Edgy to Edgy+1 should be a lot better, as they have really improved the process.

Edgy install kernel are in the downloads sidebar here; or you can download the DVD and use it direct. You will have to follow the instructions here;

I bought my Pegasos2 motherboard alone with MorphOS, not an ODW, so I have no Dapper install disks.

MorphOS, Breezy and even MacOSX with Molk works perfectly on the hardware, so I don't think there is a hardware problem, is has to be a driver or configuration problem in Dapper or the upgrade process made a mess.

I downloaded the Dapper install CD's, but unfortunately there is no vmlinuz kernel on the CD's, so I was unable to boot the setup. I heard that the Dapper DVD's contains the vmlinuz image so maybe I should try it. If there is no solution for this by configuration, I will try the DVD install.

Try the EDGY DVD install if it comes to downloading a whole DVD. See instructions above.

Dapper Should Just Work (tm) but you will need a Dapper install kernel. We had a nightmare in bringing this out for you guys (the kernels on the CDs are stripped) but there is a working one available SOMEWHERE online as a network installer (however the URL I got from Colin Watson [Canonical] doesn't work anymore)

However it needs mkvmlinuzing. Can anyone offer one, I am out of resources here (Windows, Debian x86 and FreeBSD x86 only at the moment).

Problem was solved..;) Unfortunately the upgrade was really buggy, it made a mess around the ethernet interfaces. Eth0 became Eth1 and vice-versa. Mac-addresses were also messed up. I've changed the settings around networking and dapper works very fine now.

Next will be an upgrade to edgy :)
