Yes, I know it's not exactly "usable" by us, but still it's nice to know that PowerPC (or rather POWER) is again in the lead:

However, this one doesn't really help us. POWER and
PowerPC aren't' exactly binary compatible, AFAIK?

They are. PowerPC is the "old" name for POWER.

Is it? AFAIK the MPC970 was a remake of the POWER4.

PowerPC and POWER has lived side-by-side for many years.

PPC970, MPC is usually Motorola/Freescale's prefix :)
And you're right it was based on the POWER4.

True. POWER actually preceded PowerPC. But all the recent POWER cpus are more or less binary compatible or can run common code -ie not specifically compiled for a particular architecture- but conforming to the PowerPC ISA.
