Post subject: | Problems getting MOLK to boot from CD |
Hi all I have just tried to get MOLK to boot. I edited the config files as described in the Pegasos Book, and when I booted MOLK I got a bash prompt. I typed "startmol -X --cdboot". The screen went black with a white flashing cursor in the top left corner. The DVD spins up and I can hear activity and see the activity light flashing. This eventually stops, but the screen stays black with the flashing cursor. If I switch back to the Linux terminal I see an error Could not set VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument Video transition failed Every time I switch to the black MOL screen and back to the terminal, the error is repeated. I don't know if it's relevant or just because the video driver doesn't like me switching. Any help would be much appreciated! -- moto --EDIT Don't know if this is relevant, but I'm attempting to boot a Tiger DVD on a PegII. |

This is strange. As your cd-drive spins up the problem is probably not there. Maybe you have a monitor which doesn't accept my default screenmodes? Maybe you should try to enter molvconfig in the bash & see if your own configured screenmodes give a screen... good luck so far! frostwork |

Ahhhh yes you could be on to something with the monitor. When I installed MOS I had to fiddle around a lot with the screenmode's frequencies to get it to display 1024x768 on my LCD TV. Does molvconfig let you reconfigure the screenmode MOL uses? Thanks for your help -- moto |

Hi! Yes with molvconfig you can define valid screenmodes for mol! As the boot-partition containing also the mol dir is mounted readonly you can't save the config. So you'll have to remount the bootpartition rw in order to save! good luck! frostwork |

Ok, just just to clarify: 1. "# mount" to find the loopback root device 2. umount the loopback root device (can I do this while molk is booted?) 3. Re-mount the root device r/w -- moto |

You have a bootpartition on your pegasos2 containing your linux-kernels, maybe the mos-boot-kernel & very likely the molk kernel & its friends (f.e the mol dir). Boot molk as you did & get into in the terminal Now remount your boot-partition with mount /dev/yourbootpartition /booty -o remount,rw here my bootpartition is /hda1 yours might be an other one! molfconfig should now write its resulting config to /booty/mol/fb_modes (/your bootpartition is mounted on /booty & /booty/mol/fb_modes is symlinked from /var/local/mol/fb_modes where molvconfig usually would write its file). If this doesn't work for you you could still mount an usb stick & copy the resulting fb_modes there manually... Then copy it from your favourite os to your bootpartition/mol/ cheers frostwork |

You're amazing The Tiger installer is booting from the CD as I type and I can see Tux hugging an Apple with a spinning wheel! Ooooh, it's asking me for a language now. This is exciting Thanks so much for your help! -- moto |
