Yes it works very well.

You need the Hoary Install CD for PPC which you can download from http://www.ubuntu.com/.

Then you can boot the system with a kernel Sven Luther has made,
http://people.debian.org/~luther/pegasos/pegasos. And have the CD in the drive.

At least it should work, I have not tried this kernel myself since I used my own kernel I made. Anyway it works very well when up and running. The only "problem" is that you have to fix the kernel yourself afterwards.

It works indeed, but there is one manual step needed.

When all is done, and before the reboot, you need to alt+f2 to the second console, and press enter, and then chroot /target.

There you need to apt-get install mkvmlinuz, and run mkvmlinuz.

And after the reboot you need to boot the kernel in boot generated by mkvmlinuz, this is the one with the Z, not the one with the X.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Ubuntu gives away free CDs (even without P&P), if you register on ubuntulinux.org.

OK, I managed the first step of the install. Before rebooting it displayed that to boot I would need to:
boot /pci@80000000/ide@C,1/disk@0,1:0 boot/yaboot

Which I did, now I am in yaboot. If I press enter it displays:
Please wait, loading kernel...
':-1,/vmlinux: Unable to open file, Invalid device

Why does it try from part -1 ?

I tried to:
/pci@80000000/ide@C,1/disk@0,1:0,/vmlinux with the same results
:?

At this point I am stuck.

UPDATE
I missed Sven's post when I first replied. So, since then, I restarted the installation but when I try to apt-get install mkvmlinuz it says it can not find the package ???

-------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE
OK, I have changed the apt source file and added unstable and installed mkvmlinuz and ran it mkvmlinuz -k /boot/vmlinux
Sorry, I do not know how to handle PowerPC sub-architecture chrp in version .

If I run mkvmlinuz -k /boot/vmlinux-2.6.10-5-powerpc -v
I get some errors:
objcopy: '/boot/obj/dummy.o' : no such file
objcopy: '/tmp/tmp.QjwMUZ/image.o' no such file

A step by step guide would be more than welcome :)

I also had problems with downloading and finding right version of mkvmlinuz. I didn't want to mess with apt-sources so i wgeted and installed this version of mkvmlinuz http://mirror.isp.net.au/ftp/pub/ubuntu ... owerpc.deb
Then just type mkvmlinuz and you'll have right kernel in /boot

OK I went a little further with your advice. The vmlinuz file has been generated
I rebooted and then:
boot /pci@80000000/ide@C,1/disk@0,1:0 boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-powerpc

And then after displaying the HD informations:
Stopping tasks: =1
Freing memory... done (362 pages freed)
Restarting tasks... done
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 428: can not open dev/console: No such file
Kernel Panic not syncing: Attempted to kill init !
<0>Rebooting in 180 seconds..

You need to add to bootline "root=/dev/hdXX" where hdXX is partition where you installed ubuntu.
