Hi Geoffrey, the last person we had contact with was Axel Dörfler who we donated an ODW to for the port. In the summer of 2004, we also had a few discussions with someone in or around Rochester, NY that was one of the main organizers (was Phipps the name?). Since then we have heard nothing...?!

Is there an alpha version downloadable somewhere ?

Only for x86 for now, if you're also interested into that one. Work on the PPC port has recently been continued and is making good progress since then.
Note, however, that I don't visit forums that often, so it's sometimes better to bother me via eMail, what bbrv do from time to time

Well thank you for your answer and for the links, I'm sure that should be very interesting to test, but right now, I only focus on Haiku for Pegasos PPC computers.

So I'll wait for a future PowerPC release

I could see Haiku running very well on the Efika.
A few years back, I had BeOS 5 Pro running on a 233 MHz (IIRC) PPC602 Motorola Mac clone. It was VERY responsive. Unfortunately, it requires the Mac ROM/OS 8.6 to boot, or I'd already have tried to install it on the Efika :p

BeOS was one of the most efficient and powerful operating systems of its day. I remember doing audio editing on a Celeron 333 under Be, and it was FAST. Way faster than using Goldwave under win32 on the same machine.

Be is dead, long live Be/Haiku!

You might note that we changed our Software page on the main Genesi website yesterday and removed Haiku and a couple of other operating systems while there is very little to say about them. NetBSD and FreeBSD have the pleasure of project activity and semi-working kernels. OpenSolaris, you have seen progress on. AROS and Haiku we can only say we donated, and nothing is downloadable or visible, so, we will leave it off for now.

If there is any appreciable, documented progress on Genesi hardware we will be happy to put in a box and point to the relevant places.

It's a PPC port of Haiku. I'd like to try it on EFIKA but I'm a bit rubbish at the technical side. Any ideas how to boot it from USB CD or stick?

Just like the docs on the front page say:

boot cd ppc/boot_loader_openfirmware

If it's a usb stick then just change "cd" to "scsi0" or whatever your usb stick is (try "devalias" to find out).

it doesn't work on pegasos (2) in case you'd be wondering. The image is compliant with Macs PPC, all you get by booting it on a pegasos is "wrong openfirmware version" or something close. I haven't tried on my efika yet.

Didn't work on the EFIKA either. Just barfs reporting 'Error trying to load or boot' or some such, I guess it doesn't like running on REAL OpenFirmware ;)

About PPC, the port is not actively maintained because we focus on x86 for now, and the R1/alpha release is close.

I fixed the build several times but it misses some stuff in the kernel, and QEMU can't even boot it, and my mac clones are too old.

Axel did get pegasos boards long ago, and AFAIK he succeeded in making them boot Haiku, but we changes much since then, so as I said the kernel lacks some new stuff (proper TLS init, ...).
Also, he also complained about the broken OF, but he still has them AFAIK, so he can probably finish it someday.

btw, the stuff at unixzen.com is not "a ppc port", it's just prebuilt images from the official svn, not patched.
