Hi.

Ok, I was going to check out the sources to get an idea of the scope of the work to port it again (I did so in the past), however the download site mentions the following:

"The AROS repository is running on a password protected SVN server, which means that you need to apply for access to it to be able to collaborate in the development. At the request of Amiga Inc., anonymous read-only access to the repository has been disabled."

(emphasis mine).

Why is that? What does Amiga inc. have to do with AROS?

the AROS Research Operating System used to be called "Amiga Research Operating System." Considering that the name Amiga is a registered trademark, the owner or licensee of said trademark has certain legal leverage against anyone who uses it without an explicit permission to do so.

And that keeps on going even though the name changed long ago?

Well, in addition to the forementioned trademark issue, there exist doubts about the legality of AROS in general. As referenced in publically available court documents, Evert Carton, the current Managing Partner of Hyperion Entertainment who have been developing AmigaOS4.0 for Amiga Inc., has stated that AROS is "probably illegal."

Even if AROS is most likely 100% legal, it is understandable that the developers try to have an amicable relationship with the current owners of the Amiga IP.

Doesn't AmigaOS 4.x contain some AROS source code? Granted, not as large an amount as in MorphOS, but still, enough that suing them should be rather stupid :)
