MySQL AB released a Case Study today on Pegasos Servers being used to support Greyhound-Data.com, the world's largest greyhound database and the world's most popular greyhound racing web site. The Greyhound Data Case Study can be downloaded here on the MySQL AB site.

Gunnar von Boehn is the webmaster of Greyhound Data. Gunnar is not only a MySQL expert as he is the PowerPC MySQL Lead during his working day, but a long time Pegasos user having had his first Pegasos in 2002. :)

On a personal note, we like the von Boehn Coat of Arms. Gunnar's family received the title for rescuing a duke with the help of three greyhounds "white and slim" in 1194. As his family saga relates: ..the hounds are, you know them my child, even faster than the fastest wind and well known throughout the country. We even blogged about it today. Great stuff, Gunnar!

PegPower!

R&B :)

This is very impressive. And it also shows, that one can use 1/10 of eletricity, if using a good machine ( http://www.pegasosppc.com/odw.php ) with a good database designer. I often see dual Xeon machines to strugle wich much smaller databases, and they have much higher initial and support costs as well :) Raw processor performance is not everything...

There are many sites which suffer from a "suboptimal" design
and rather invest in new hardware instead tuning the application.
I know one commercial automotive portal which uses over 300 servers for a taks which could be with some rcleaning up be handled by a handfull of pegasos servers.

The Greyhound site is not perfect either. There is still much room for tuning. :-)

Cheers
Gunnar
