What - comparing to that thread regarding Fedora Core 4 - do I have to do differently on OpenSUSE 10.0 to use the Java plugin for Firefox?

The IBM Java packet has been installed. Since the file libjavaplugin_oji.so didn't exist in the /opt/ibm/java2-ppc-50/jre/bin/ directory (and also nowhere else on the harddisk) after the installation, I copied it there manually from the IBM Java RPM.

After this, I moved on according to the Mozilla FAQ, i.e. I created a symbolic link in the plugins directoy of the MozillaFirefox tree.

But still I'm getting just the "missing plugin" symbol when surfing e.g. to Javatester.org.

So what else do I have to do under SUSE to let Firefox use the Java plugin?

I'll try to figure this out, as soon, as I sorted out my login problems at IBM. I have an old login name, I used often, but now I can't log in, can't send me a password and can't create a new ID with the same name

Senex: I don't understand why the file doesn't exist, if you've installed the RPM.

I don't think copying the file into the plugins directory is sufficient; I have a vague recollection that it needs to be a symlink because that's how it finds the directory which contains the rest of the Java installation.

I didn't copy it into the plugins directory. There indeed I've just created a symlink. But I had to copy the file from the RPM into the corresponding IBM Java directory manually, i.e. to the place it was supposed to be automatically after the RPM's installation.

So it seems the auto-installation of IBM's Java RPMs doesn't woek correctly under OpenSUSE 10.0? Or did anyone of you succeed to use the Java plugin with Firefox?

How did you install the RPM? Are the _rest_ of the files from the RPM actually present?

Ahem, well... At least I did think so - but looking at the version number I do suppose now the stuff in /usr/lib/jvm/IBMJava2-1.4.2/jre had been part of the OpenSuSE standard installation already. :-/

Trying to install the RPM again doesn't succeed, though. (I did - or thought to have done - it before by adding the RPMs' directory as YaST installation source and installing it by YaST.)

So did anyone of you actually succeed in installing the new IBM Java package under OpenSuSE 10.0 - and if so, how?

I have installed the downloaded rpm without any problems. I did not have any missing dependencies, but I must admit, that I have lot's of packages installed

The command line tools work well, I was able to compile java software and run the compiled applications. What I couldn't get to function, is the java plugin. It's there and shown by 'about:plugins', but still Java applets do not run in the browser.

It's already in the Novell bugzilla, and also posted to the suse-ppc list, so the problem is taken care of. Hopefully it will be in edge next week, and then in alpha3 later on.

I am having this same issue, I have installed jre 1.4.2.13 into SUSE10 and created the sym link. But Firefox still says I have a missing plugin. Does anyone know if there is a resolution to this issue.

It was compiled with a lot older version of Mozilla, so it's interesting, how it gets listed at all... I hope, that GPL-ing Java will change this situation.
