Post subject:  SUSE Linux 10.1 beta9 is here
Instead of RC1, SUSE Linux 10.1 beta9 is here. It's the last beta before 10.1, in two weeks we will hopefully reallz see RC1. You can download it from http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version#Downloads.

Onboard gigabit ethernet finally not just works, but also YaST (actually hwinfo) knows about it.

Xorg still does not start, but a fix is already checked in, just it was too late for the beta.

I would suggest waiting until the weekend, as factory mirrors are usually slow to catch up and are often inconsistent. After a CD relese, like due this Thursday, it's frozen for 3-4 days, so mirrors can catch up, and can be used as additional installation sources to CD installations.
Errr... How can I do this please (setting 'factory' as installation source).
In fact, I'm more familiar with Debian/Ubuntu installation system.

Yes, the mini boot from factory is enough, and then choose update instead of a new install. Download it from http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/opensuse/d ... ot.ppc.iso for example. It seems to be a fast and uptodate mirror from France.

I must admit, that I have never done an upgrade before, as I prefere to do fresh installs, but according to the mailing lists, it should be perfectly possible now. This is because for most part of the alpha/beta phase, an upgrade is not possible. And I need to keep my 10.0 partition anyway... This also means, that I'm very interested in your experiences ;-)

I've downloaded the files and burn a "mini-CD".
I booted the CD (boot cd suseboot/inst32 video=radeonfb:1024x768@60) and a text prompt says :
"Make sure that CD1 is in your drive"
1)OK
2)Back

Then I can't go further as I don't have the CD1...
I did not have time to do more as I'm quite busy this week end but it's quite strange that CD1 is required.

Will try again later...

This situation is described in my manual I wrote.

First of all: if you don't like that ugly interface, where you need to choose options by numbers, you should use the 'linemode=0' boot option. This gives you a nice nurses based menu istead of the default, which is designed for the serial console, with large IBM servers in mind. BTW: even the menu seems to work fine on the serial console...

The CD1 situation is also described. With long, cryptic boot parameters, it's possible to avoid it. But it's a lot more easy to use a menu. From the manual:

It is possible to choose other installation sources as boot parameters, but it's more convenient (less typing, and less documentation reading) to choose installation sources using a curses based menu system.

No matter, what you choose here, the result will be the same. If you hit 'enter' on 'OK', then you are presented with an error message and must use 'enter' again to continue. Other way you can use the right arrow or tab to get to 'back', and with 'enter' you get to the same screen as the other way.

OK !
I've re-read your manual and started it again with "linemode=0", then I've setup my Internet connexion (by adding via-rhine driver).

I've then selected the "installation update" with FTP protocol.

DHCP detection went OK.

And I've entered 81.223.20.173 (ftp://suse.inode.at) for the FTP server's address.

But then, connexion seems OK but install prog asks for a path :
I've entered :
/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.1-beta9/iso/SUSE-Linux-10.1-beta9-ppc-CD1.iso
but it does not find the file (with or without ISO name).

Where am I wrong ?

I've just understood the right path was :

But now the FTP server is unreachable (have to wait... grrr).

OK : here are all the steps I did :

1) Download miniCD
http://ftp.fi.muni.cz/pub/linux/opensus ... ot.ppc.iso

2) Boot it under OF :
boot cd suseboot/inst32 video=radeonfb:1024x768@60 linemode=0

3) Make sure CD1 is in your Drive : "Back"
Select language : "English"

4) Enable network driver :
Kernel modules (Hw drivers) / Load PPC modules
Select "via-rhine" with no extra parameter

5) Open network connexion :
Start installation on system
Start installation update
Network
FTP
Automatic conf DHCP : Yes
IP addess of the server : 147.251.48.205 (this is ftp.fi.muni.cz)
User and password : no
HTTP proxy : no
Directory : /pub/linux/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/

6) YaST2 :
language : english
licence : ok
install mode : update
a few hw modules are detected (USB, ReiserFS, Ext3...)
Then I can select the partition where Suse 10.0 is installed (/dev/hdb5).

And here is a problem I can not solve in the Installation Settings screen : the installation media does not seem to be recognized :

- System
System : CHRP
Processor : 7447/7457, altivec supported
Main memory : 512MB
- Installation media : ??
- Update options : Cannot read installation packages from installation media. Media error ?
- Packages
Packages to update : 0
New packages to install : 0
Packages to remove : 1180
Total sizeof packages to update : 0
- ...


Any hints ?
I'm going to try with full install if there is no solution with update but I would like some advice before.

No hints - yet - as I have never done an update before, just about 200+ new installs in the past months...

I'll copy my 10.0 partition to another one and try an upgrade later this week.

Please don't install "factory" today! A small, about 16k library is missing from the 32bit PPC port, and makes installation impossible.
