I'm glad to announce, that SUSE Linux 10.1 beta6 is here. I skipped announcing beta5, as that was just as disasterious, as beta4. SuSE Linux went through a major package manager update, which caused some instability and delay.
Beta6 still does not have all the features, but at least, it works fine. Some notes, before giving away download information:
- installing the 'factory' distribution has some memory leaks. Turning on swap is needed to get started with the 'overview sreen'. Just use 'start_sheel' among boot argument, and turn on swap, when you reach the shell.
- it's more advised to use the CD set for installation. That does not have these memory problems, and due to its smaller package selection, it's also much faster to install
- talking about speed: there are some points during installation, which seem to stay there without end. Just take a break, drink a tea/beer/etc, it will continue. Stable functionality comes first, speed improvements come next. As long, as your machine responds to moving the mouse or 'caps-lock', you are safe.
