Post subject:  full multimedia for PPC openSUSE 10.0 final

Hello,

I have just uploaded some Packman ( http://packman.links2linux.de/ )
packages compiled for PPC to ftp://spike.fa.gau.hu/pub/pmppc/ , which
give PPC openSUSE the missing multimedia functionalities. It has
enhanced KDE multimedia support, all kinds of audio and video support
(only for those formats, which have OSS drivers, as Win32Codecs do not
work here...), and some additional utilities.

Just add it as an additional idditional installation source, and you are
ready to install the packages.

Some notes:
- all packages were compiled on a G4 Pegasos
- I added some CFLAGS, which seem to improve speed and lower CPU usage
on G4. These are: "-mtune=G4 -maltivec -mabi=altivec" (borrowed from
Gentoo's /etc/make.conf). I read the gcc man page, but I'm still not
sure, if it breaks compatibilty with non Altivec PPC processors or not.
I don't have access to other PPC processors, so please test it, and let
me know. I'll recompile without it (or make a non optimized tree as
well, if there is problem with it).

Bye,
CzP

Hello,
I have just finished recompiling all packages without Altivec optimalisations. They are uploaded now. They did not have a real performance advantage (max 5%, but sometimes even got slower), and I received some complaints from G3 users.
I also added ldvd (a DVD backup software) to the selection, which has already fixes for bufferoverflow problems, I found last week.
CzP

Ps: I will take a closer look at the kernel, as disabling some options would probably give some speed up. Taking out the buffer overflow checking code from CFLAGS would also help, as it has some performance penalty, but with xine and MPlayer it's probably better to leave it enabled.

BTW Kernel...it seems that the kernel is turning off the build-in Ethernet device which makes trouble when booting into MorphOS. I have to power-off the Pegasos to get ethernet working under MorphOS again after a SUSE session.

Hello,
I don't have MorphOS running, so I can't test it. Please post a bugreport at http://bugzilla.novell.com/ (free registration is required).

Its not really a bug. MorphOS just cant reactivate the ethernet chip. Thought it can be disabled somehow.

Now I just wish a better GFX driver. Current GUI (I use Gnome) is extrem slow compared to MorphOS.

It's also slow on a 2.6Ghz Xeon with proper GFX drivers ;-)
You should try Xfce4, which is light weight and fast.

I saw Gnome on a x86 Laptop and it was much faster.

I wanted to say, that you should add some RAM, but you have already 512M. Did you turn on 3D acceleration, as described in the openSUSE wiki at http://www.opensuse.org/PowerPC_X11_configuration? It helped with KDE performance a lot.

Yes, it is activated but I didnt recognized any speedup. I don't have KDE installed.

Hello,
There were some security updates for Packman packages (libxine, etc.), and some feature adttitions (ffmpeg) so I will recompile most of the packages when I got home. If you plan to install these packages in the coming days, please wait for release announcment!

BTW: gnome speed seems to depend on the processor. I have an old 2.4Ghz P4 at home, and it does not feel any faster with GNOME, than my Peg2 at 1Ghz. I have a 2.6Ghz Xeon at the university, where I'm a PhD student, and there GNOME felt much faster. But it's 0.2Ghz faster, 1024k cache at full speed, and needs a personal nuclear reactor to power it.

Hello,
I recompiled all of the packages from recent source packages and added some new packages, like bmpx, audacity, etc. But beware! I had time only for limited testing. I'll test as much as possible this evening (Central European Time ;-) .
