Here is a short collection of workarunds for openSUSE 10.1 alpaha3 problems:

To get X working, change in /etc/X11/xorg.conf the line from:
BusID "PCI:1@1:8:0"
to:
BusID "PCI:1@0:8:0"
I did not check 3D yet.

To get the ps/2 mouse working, modprobe psmouse and add it to modules loaded at bootup in /etc/sysconfig/kernel

To get networking working: delete packages NetworkManager-gnome and NetworkManager and reconfigure networking. It seems to be a dhcp related problem, will be probably fixed today.

Lot of packages are missing the 'capability' kernel module, and have misterious problems without it. Jost modprobe it, and add it as psmouse.

To be continued...

I downloaded openSUSE factory http://www.opensuse.org/Factory_Distribution and installed it today. Here are my first experiences:

- PS/2 mouse finally works without workarounds!
- X still needs that workaround (editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf) to get started. That lands you in a configuration, where screen size is equal to the one used during installation, but frequency is set to 60Hz (which is very ugly on a 19" CRT...)
- Sax2 does not work from the command line (dies away always with the broken PCI configuration), but works fine from an already started X.
- multiple outputs (cloning, cinerama) are theoretically supported, but my machine froze, when tried it...
- networking seems to be fixed (NetworkManager)

Bye,
CzP
