Hi Everybody,

I'm a (ex) MOS user now because of the limations of SW and HW on it,
and now using Linux / Debian for a year now, not quite satisfided :(
It's way to slow (maybe because i'm used to MOS:)), like windows
opening or exp. mail programs takes seconds to load, maybe it is
my Voodoo Card..dunno...don't think so because as Mplayer in MOS
plays divx, avi etc etc like fast as hell and with XINE or other movieplayer
i won't even can play a file synschroom..waaaay to slowww :(
So..
Is YDL or Mandrake a big diffrents in speed, SW etc etc.. ???
And if i go to homepage of YDL i see it is a commercial product ?!?
Do we get on the Peg G4 Linux the full Linux speed with Internet etc etc ??
Or must i after over 10 years "Amiga" fan and bought the Peg for a
last solution buy a WinBlows machine ?!?!
Because i really don't have to i know...If i wanna play full 3D games i go
play on the my XBOX :)
But just getting nuts of the limiations of SW and speed on it..
Soo.. Just want to know which Linux is the fastest and have the most SW on it :)

Thx

Yes, please get yourself a radeon, it is well probable that your voodoo is
working only in software framebuffer mode, and has no acceleration at all
enabled, which would be the reason for this perceived slowness. A G4 Pegasos 2
(which i expect you have) should have no problems viewing video files.

No, it is mostly the same kernel and the same programs.

It is indeed. I would if i were you go for debian, gentoo or ubuntu. Probably
the latest at this stage since it is the most userfriendly, Mandrake has no
real powerpc support anymore.

Sure.

Get yourself a radeon, and you will notice the difference.

Support for Voodoo cards are not that great on Linux since they aren't produced anymore. You really should consider switching to a Radeon.
Xine is good for DVDs but if you play anything else you really should be using MPlayer on Linux as well.

As for the fastest Linux, Gentoo might prove to be slightly faster since you can configure it to optimise for your particular computer. I'm not sure how big a difference it will make on a ppc though, on x86 it is definately noticable.

As for most software, there are about 9000 packages in Gentoo Portage at this time (http://packages.gentoo.org/). Approximately 7000 of these have been tested on ppc so far, but we are working on increasing this number. I don't know how many packages other distributions offer.

Another way of decreasing desktop latency is to switch to a lightweight desktop. I have no idea what you are using now but try XFCE (if you need a fully fledged desktop) or if you want something even lighter go for fluxbox or something.

I recognize you from the MOS community :-)

Do yourself a favour and go with a good Radeon agp card with 128bit chip - Radeon 9k series is good and reasonable. This will change your linux experience dramatically...

Additionaly the Radeon 3d stuff for MOS is working and should be released in near future...

magnetic

ps.. and DONT ask SVen about Voodoo support for Deb he HATES voodoo cards! heheh

hi readers:
after reading this it seemed to me that given the
people here and your contacts i wondered if the
"Secret Video Encoding Tool „ATI Avivo Xcode“ revealed" might be ported to peg ?.

i tryed a beta copy on my windows xp with a radion 9550 and to my amazement SOME of it actually worked there too, not to a great extent with the h264 encoding but works rather well for divx/xvid.

its not suposed to work at all so that was a nice suprise.

Encoding movies five times faster

By Arnt Kugler / November 2005

Avivo XCode: Top-secret power tool for ATI’s Radeon X1000 GPUs

CHIP Online had the opportunity to test a beta version of ATI’s still secret „Avivo XCode“ encoding tool. It uses the power of the GPU to reduce video encoding time –into virtually any format – drastically. Our results show: The new ATI solution easily does it 5 times faster than even the fastest CPUs available today! "

"Only new ATI graphics cards need apply

There’s a hook however: Avivo XCode only runs on PCs with ATIs Radeon X1000 series VGA cards; i.e. X1300, X1600, X1800 in their respective Pro or XT versions, as well as their All-in-Wonder version.
Our tests indicate that even the cheapest model, a Radeon X1300 available for around 90 Euros in Europe, can achieve dramatic speed increases at crunching down videos."

i wondered IF peg users were to get one of these
radeon X GPU's could bb or someone here ask about
using the great potential for video encoding
from linux if you can get the code for us.

it seems a rather amiga thing to have a usable co-processor This user programable GPU seems to kick arse/butt :D

would these GPU's even work as is (without the encoding part ? as everyone seems to advocate
the older 95** series ?.
