I recently bought a Pegasos II board with the G4 CPU. The firmware version is v1.2 (20050808153840). I've tried Radeon 7000 PCI and AGP and an AGP Radeon 9100, all with the same problem. (All are ATi, not "OEM" with Radeon chipsets.)

Booting the system from CD always works well, but booting from hard disk results in a corrupted display. In MorphOS it's a black screen with about 1/2 inch of green or yellow at the top of the screen, and in Debian Linux it looks like a 80x25 CGA grid with randomly flashing colored blocks.

The system is apparently completely hung when this happens; at least I cannot ssh to or ping the Debian system.

Setting "diag-switch?" to true in OF helps, but is still not reliable. If the system does boot into the OS, it's stable for as long as I leave it running (as much as several days).

I've seen some references to similar issues on the MorphZone lists, but no clear solution.

Is this a hardware issue, firmware, or have I just missed something silly?

The Radeon 7k pci can be a problem with peg from my experience. I have a Radeon 9100 agp works great with Linux, MOS, and Mac Os. So the 9100 should work. You may have a problem with your board.. but try one more agp card I recommend a Voodoo 3000 or Radeon 7000 agp.

magnetic,
Thanks, but I had already tried a Voodoo3 3000 AGP and a Radeon 7000 AGP. Same problem.

Still, there's good news. I swapped the NVRAM battery last night and Linux is booting normally with the 9100, even with the diag-switch? parameter set to false. (Don't ask me why I thought changing the battery might fix the display. Maybe from working with 68k Macs....)

MorphOS still crashes unless diag-switch? is set true, but I can live with that if I have to.

Very strange. So, lets get this straight. You changed out the batt and linux is ok and mos is not? What about booting from a Morphos CD??

Are you on the MOS ML? If not, you should join. Also posting this problem on morphzone.org would get lots of answers from knowledgable ppl.
