I have an iBook with FC4 installed. The sound through the built-in speakers works fine but when you plug something into the headphone jack not only does the sound not cut over from the speakers but it doesn't even play any sound through the jack. The jack use to work fine when I had OSX install previously.

Anyone have this problem before? Anyone know how to go about fixing it?

I have the same problem with my quick silver power mac.
I think it it a problem in FC4's or newer kernel sound drivers.
Gnome puts up an error message about not finding any mixer, but I can control the volume in
Xmms and Xine

It sounds like you need to turn the headphone jack on in ALSA. Try alsamixer as root.

The alsamixer command did not help.
But I found a solution, edit the file /etc/asound.state os that the listing for
'Headphone Playback Switch' is true.
then type alsactl restore

My listing was at true to start with and I switch it to false with no change so I switched it back tu true and the speackers plugged in the headphone jack started playing music.
