Having the capability for Google video conversations and hangouts is absolutely essential. How do we install Google video chat, http://www.google.com/chat/video , on the Efika smartbook? - Thanks

Hi Joel.

Sadly, Google Video Chat is not available for Linux on ARM devices...
There might be the option of using it on the Efika with Android, but I'm not sure if you can just download the APK or not.

If anyone has experience with this, please post...

Johan.

Since Google Video Chat works on the ARM processor Google Chromebook, it should work on the ARM processor Genesi Efika Smartbook, http://www.genesi-usa.com/products/smartbook . It seems like there should be a way to do this.

Unfortunately we are yet to see an ARM-based chromebook.

Thanks for the corrections. It sounds like adapting Google Video Chat for Android which runs on ARM is the best option. Does anyone know how long it would take to do this? I tried Mumble and Ekiga as possible alternates but don't think I would use them. I want to have Google Video Chat and phone capability when I am traveling with the Efika Smartbook.

Hi.

Probably the only way is to try and run the Android app on the Efika running Android:
http://www.powerdeveloper.org/platforms/efikamx/android

It won't be possible to adapt the Android app to run on Linux since the set of libraries needed to do so would require a full Android runtime - basically a port of all the needed Android libraries/abstractions/Dalvik/etc.

Johan.

Google should be finished with Chrome for ARM computers soon which means we will have Google Video Chat for ARM computers.

Update: I'm not a developer, just a software tester so am getting conflicting reports on whether Google Video Chat for Android on ARM would run on Ubuntu for ARM such as in the Genesi Efika Smartbook. In case Google Video Chat or Chrome needs to be cross compiled, details are at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxChromiumArm
