Hi,

Someone pointed out to me that Linux on Handheld (ie. Zaurus)
is based on OPIE - to gain speed.
http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/

I was told that the Opie based applications will render directly on framebuffer and not need X-server.
This way the opie using linux will save resources and be faster. (Similar to OS-X or MOS being less complicated in drawing then X and faster this way)

Would it make sense to use a distribution using OPIE on EFIKA?

Cheers
Gunnar

Hi.

Wouldn't it be the same as just using QTopia (embedded)?

Best regards,
Johan

My vote is to go and grab the latest release of DirectFB, the pre-release of Qtopia 4.4, and make sure you build the Qt/DirectFB module for output. Hopefully it'll be in the 4.4 release for real.

The problem with OPIE and all the other PDA toolkits around is they're all 4 or 5 years old and using ancient, unsupported versions of the Qt toolkit, or using totally-non-PDA-aware versions of GTK and GNOME.

Work from something modern, and you'll get there. You could build KDE without the desktop and run it on Qtopia Core - including most of the applications you want to run on a small PDA like a messaging client, since they are all baed on the Qt framework and not "weird standalone apps which talk proprietary and disparate protocols" - it's all abstracted behind Qt.

...
Sounds good.

Would be real nice if someone could work on this for the EFIKA distro. A "swifter" EFIKA Linux/OS is still planned to be produced, right?

Cheers
