Hello all,

I just purchased an EFIKA system with the XGI video card from Directron. I'm thinking I have a video card problem, but figured I better check before sending it back. I have tried several different kernels and one thing they all have in common is that once the kernel starts booting the video signal vanishes. I've tried passing various vga= parameters, but always ends the same. Is this most likely a hardware problem or am I doing something stupid?

i don't have a XGI card but you can try to boot forcing the kernel to use the only OpenFirmware framebuffer (if it's compiled in):
Code:
yourkernel video=ofonly
The EFIKA best choice on linux (and/or xorg) is, actually, a Radeon 9250 128MB.

Thanks for the reply.
I tried the video=ofonly and it doesn't drop the video signal, but appears to lock up right where it normally does.

The last output is:

Calling quiesce...
returning from prom_init

Then it dies. I assume this is where it normally changes video modes?

Yes, you need to have sisfb compiled in (SiS/XGI framebuffer in kernel config) for it to work.

The X.org XGI driver seems a little broken on PPC right now but there is a patch here;

Thanks for the suggestion of video card. I bought a 9250 and it works spectacular with the "radeon" driver.
Thank you both for your replies.
