Hello, I have successfully installed the default debian linux on my efika but I don't like it and would prefer something like fedora or xubuntu. Is this possible? and if it is how?

i heard of someone turning a Debian installation into a Ubuntu one, but i don't consider it as a solid option.
You will soon have full support for the Efika with Suse, and you can already try Gentoo or Crux.

It is, but with some difficulty. You may have to build your own install kernel, and a kernel to install once the system is installed by the installer :D

For now we recommend Debian or Crux or Gentoo as they are the easiest to get hold of. There is a "Stage 4" for the popular Gentoo system (http://dev.gentoo.org/~humpback/efika/ - thanks Gustavo) which means you don't need to compile a thing.

We're working on other Linux distro support but a lot of them rely on "burn a CD and boot from it" installation, obviously this is an expensive route for the Efika where your best and cheapest option to install a system is put the installation files on a USB key (for all of $7, rather than $47 for an external USB CDROM :)

I have been trying to run Crux lately unfortunatelly with no success. My equipment, besides the Efika, include a PC with Fedora & Windows, both connected via ethernet. I am new to linux, I am trying to figure out how to make things work but my free time is short :(

What I have done is this:
*) Downloaded crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1.iso with my PC

*) Mounted it to the filesystem like this: mount -t iso9660 -o loop crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1.iso /mnt/crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1

*) Added to the /etc/hosts.allow file the following line: ALL: LOCAL

*) Restarted the NFS service like: service stop nfs / service start nfs

*) Tried to boot efika like this: boot hd:0 /boot/kernel_efika nfsaddrs=192.168.178.23:192.168.178.21::255.255.255.0 nfsroot=/mnt/crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1

It doesn't work though, the debian kernel starts but it says something like NFS not responding. I am confused with the whole NFS thing and what exactly I am trying to do by booting a debian kernel with another filesystem! And why do I need an install kernel and another kernel after the system is installed? :?

when I'm booting to an NFS share I use The only other thing I can think of is that you need to add /mnt/crux-ppc-2.2.0.2-rc1 to your /etc/exports so the NFS server knows what to do, if you haven't already.

i think this is only an NFS conf related problem, in the next week i'll investigate to reproduce a real step by step CRUXPPC (with the stable ISO) installation procedure and may be a pendrive distro installer.

Yeah, I'm actually having NFS problems now, too... really kinda odd. It was working fine the other day, and now it doesn't seem to boot from it at all. No idea why.

My foreign language skills are abysmal, but are you mounting an NFS share of a mounted ISO file (i.e. loop mount ISO file as a filesystem in /fakecdrom and exporting /fakecdrom) or are you putting the ISO in the NFS share and mounting it OVER NFS (so, when you mount on the Efika you see a filesystem with cruxppc.iso in it)?

Loopmounting over NFS is flakey at best, it really has to be that you export individual files from the ISO filesystem mounted on the server, and not try and mount the CD on the Efika..

I think this is not correct... if you read man 5 hosts_access this will tell you that LOCAL implies either that you can reverse lookup the hostname via dns or that you have it in /etc/hosts and in both cases it has got no dots in its name... i would suggest something like: or: in your case i guess it'd be: I'm not sure about red-hat but you probably have to stop services in this oreder: nfs-server, nfs, portmap and restart them in this order: portmap, nfs, nfs-server... maybe in red-hat nfs and nfs-server services are merged in one service... btw you shouldn't need nfslock.

But before starting these services, be sure to export the path where you mounted the crux cdrom/iso filesystem; as you can read on our site, in Acrux' HowTO, you should put a line like the following in /etc/exports: It is very important that you export it with no_root_squash, or the efika system you're about to install won't be able to read any file at all.
you are suggested to use our efika kernel that you can find in Crux-PPC 2.2.0.2-rc1 cdrom ;-) but debian kernel should work as well... It's usually good practice that you tune your kernel on your needs, and this is particularly true on an embedded system like EFIKA, that is usually used for one specific purpose... but if the bootkernel included in the cd is not missing any feature you need, you can just stick with that :D, just copy the kernel and its modules from the installation cd!
