This has come up a few times in the past week in the Gentoo forums and on IRC. Even though I'm a Gentoo developer, I do hope Ubuntu decides to maintain their PowerPC port. The more developers we have working on PowerPC, the better. Whatever their decision, Gentoo/PowerPC will still be supported. :)

Does it take a rocket scientist? A PowerPC machine doesn't run Windows, so it makes sense for a Linux distro to support it knowing that that machine makes the world a bit more Win-free.

If you're referring to the Live x86 installer, that needed the Gentoo Installer's support, which wasn't finished for the last release. Instead of releasing something that wasn't working, we decided to go with what works. Seems that we made the right decision, considering how many people complained about the x86 2006.1 installer. (Not to knock the Gentoo Installer folks, it just wasn't ready yet).

The Gentoo Community has always been a strong PowerPC supporter.

Actually, I forgot about the experimental version that RelEng was working on. It doesn't include a working installer, but it does contain a LiveCD environment with the same configuration as the x86 version. You're welcome to test it out. :)

Go to the Gentoo mirrors ( http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml ), pick a mirror close to you. Navigate to experimental/ppc/livecd/ and download the livecd-ppc-installer-2006.1.iso and boot it as you would any other Gentoo Install CD.

Enjoy. :)

I haven't posted much here mainly because I don't own a Genesi-made machine or anything similar, but I do think it's a great community which is why I continue to visit. For the Ubuntu team to drop support for the PowerPC would be a horrible decision IMO, even if it doesn't garner as much attention to them (or others) as the x86 ports.

Maybe there might be some way to get the gNewSense guys to continue the PowerPC port that Ubuntu is thinking of dropping? I currently use Ubuntu on a few PowerPC Macs that I have at work and home and would hate to see this disappear as Ubuntu is a great distro. And for non-Apple PowerPC hardware it would probably be even worse. Sure, there are other distros supporting PPC but the more the better, and Ubuntu and its siblings has the right mix IMO.
